Outdoor education

The Avamposto outdoor education project is ongoing and dedicated to children aged 3-6. It is possible to attend twice or three times a week in a mixed-age and mixed-gender group.

SAB-LAB! SAB-LAB! Workshops and events on the calendar

Saturday workshops and events open to the public are scheduled throughout the year and can be found on our social media pages. These are ideal opportunities to come and learn about our organisation and meet experts in various fields related to ecology, archaeology, zoology, arts and crafts in our area. They are also aimed at adults, not exclusively children.

Introduction to the world of donkeys

Children and adults are introduced to the world of donkeys through an ethological approach, starting with the natural inclinations and needs of the donkey. Theoretical and practical knowledge is imparted on the management and training of donkeys in order to correctly carry out grooming activities (coat care) and handling within the enclosure. The activity is led by a Level I donkey-riding technician recognised by CONI.

Rain creates puddles and new streams, fog envelops the landscape and transforms it, the wind shapes the clouds… there aren’t ‘bad days’ or ‘bad weather’ for enjoying the countryside! We find shelter and enjoy hot drinks together in a yurt: the important thing is to have the right equipment!

We believe in the educational community because learning is a social phenomenon. It is important that our space is a place where relationships can be forged and ideas exchanged. We involve families in a genuine educational alliance through a shared educational agreement. We organise training sessions for young people and parents and monitor the progress of the project together with them and relevant experts, with transparency and mutual listening.

Company and cooperative teams can use our spaces for coordination sessions, meetings, psychological supervision, and nature-based team-building activities.

Schools of all levels can contact us to plan tailor-made experiences designed around their specific audience.

Historic Center Tours, Archaeo-rural Treks, and Introduction to the World of Donkeys

Santa Caterina dello Ionio covers an area of over 40 km². We’re part of WE’RE SOUTH APS and promote slow, sustainable, local tourism. Sofia is co-editor of the book “Santa Caterina dello Ionio. Environment, cultural stratifications, rural landscapes”, published by Rubbettino Editore (2021). If you’d like to explore the main points of interest, get in touch with us. You can walk on foot or alongside a donkey, after an introductory workshop and basic handling skills led by Raffaele, who is a CONI Level 1 pack-donkey technician.

After-School Support

You can get support with your school journey outside the walls of a traditional classroom too. At Avamposto, we can organize knowledge-building sessions for ages 6–14. We also offer personalized literacy courses and Italian as a second language (L2) lessons for foreigners of all ages, with a certified teacher.

Birthday Parties

Not sure where to celebrate your little one’s birthday? Want to party with their usual friends out in the countryside, with total freedom? At Avamposto you can, thanks to our fully equipped base camp. Just agree on the date and details with us for an eco-friendly, ethical, unforgettable nature party.

Retreats

Among the extra activities we can organize are retreats in partnership with professionals in yoga, bread-making, permaculture, as well as musicians, actors, dancers, and other fields that align with the place’s ecological spirit.
